Exquisite Antique Treasures at our Historic Charleston Hotel
Guests of The Mills House, the perfect destination among hotels in Charleston, SC, will discover an extensive collection of valuable antiques found throughout this historic hotel. These antiques were gathered by Anthony Hale, who is also responsible for the White House collection during the Kennedy renovation.
One of the most stunning pieces is the opulent period chandelier located in the registration lobby which once graced the Belle Meade Plantation in Nashville. Another notable piece includes a ca. 1810 English Regency-style zebrawood center table found in the Meeting Street Lobby and is referred to by Hale as “one of the best antiques in the collection.” Along with beautiful furnishings, priceless paintings adorn many of the walls. A ca. 1775 portrait of Declaration of Independence signer Arthur Middleton welcomes visitors to the hotel’s North Parlor. According to Hale, “one of the best portraits in the hotel” is the ancestral Chinese Ming portrait in the parlor adjacent to the Best Friend Bar.
Visitors to the Best Friend Bar will find a multitude of railroad artifacts from the Museum of Memories, in Virginia City, Nevada. Some of these items include an identification plate manufactured in 1907, a steam whistle, brass spittoon and a map of the Comstock district. Stay at the Mills House and immerse yourself in the history of America and Charleston South Carolina without ever leaving the hotel!
