Coming to Charleston for a romantic getaway? Find tickets to this highly anticipated musical theater performance, and start planning a special date at America's first theater. Throughout the month of April (4-5, 9-12, 17-19, 24-26 at 7:30 p.m. and 6, 13, and 20 at 3 p.m.), audiences can delight in this original full-scale musical. The production follows the story of George Gershwin's 1934 vacation on Folly Beach. During this time, he began working on Porgy and Bess with DuBose Heyward. (Porgy and Bess is the iconic 1959 Gershwin opera set in 1912 South Carolina starring Sidney Poitier as Porgy.)
The price for this performing arts event ranges from $38.50 to $57.50, with discounts available for seniors, students, and active military. Charleston Stage sets the stage for many of the best shows throughout the year, including The Foreigner and Pinkalicious. With guest actor Ian Lowe starring as Gershwin, this particular production will celebrate the yesteryears of South Carolina's enriched Gullah culture.
Inspired by the backdrop of the lush Lowcountry, Gershwin and Heyward created their masterpiece. In this moving musical, audiences can see a creative camera behind the original camera. All the drama unfolds as professional actors, singers, dancers, a live orchestra, and dazzling sets captive the crowds. Musical numbers will include some of Gershwin's most prized pieces, including the immortal hit "Summertime".
